چکیده

Stepped spillways are hydraulic structures that, because of their significant capacity in energy dissipation, have been widely used by designers. Flow mechanism over them is complex and many investigations have been performed to study that mechanism. The effect of some parameters such as the number of steps in energy dissipation has not been fully investigated. In this study the latest design criteria have been reviewed and then an algorithm has been developed to design the stepped spillways which are based on the effect of number of steps. Results show that the number of steps affects the energy dissipation. With increasing the number of steps energy dissipation increases and then decreases. Thus for specific discharge and spillway slope, the number of steps can be optimized for maximum energy dissipation. By reducing design discharge the optimum number of steps increases. Research work on this subject can be continued in the future and various aspects of the design parameters may be investigated [Mohammad Karami . Influence of Slope and the Number of Steps on Energy Dissipation in Stepped Spillway Using Numerical Model

Recently the stepped spillways have been used as an appropriate solution for energy dissipation. In the present study, Siahbisheh dam spillway is simulated by using Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD), in which the Mixture method and Reynolds Stresses Model (RSM) turbulence model is used. In the first modeling series the over all steppes slope is constant. The number of the steps is increased to ...

Determination of Aerated Steps Number over Broad-Crest Stepped Spillways under Jet Flow Regime by using Artificial Neural Network

Recently, particular attention has been paid to the stepped spillways due to the increasing effect of energy dissipation and the reduction of cavitations risks with the development of Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) technique. Flow regimes on the spillways divide into three groups, namely skimming, jet and transition flow. Compared to the numerical methods, the majority of performed studies in ...

The Study of Energy Loss in Stepped- Labyrinth Spillways

A ‘spillway’ is a structure used to provide the controlled release of flood water from upstream into downstream area of a dam. As an important component of every dam, a spillway should be constructed strongly, reliably and efficiently to be used at any moment. Labyrinth and stepped spillways are presented as appropriate modifications to those spillways hardly capable of managing the maximum pot...

Simple Design Criterion for Residual Energy on Embankment Dam Stepped Spillways

The stepped spillway design is associated with significant flow resistance and associated energy dissipation on the steps, yielding smaller, more economical downstream dissipation structures. A number of design guidelines were developed for steep stepped spillways typical of concrete gravity dams. The focus of this study is on embankment stepped spillways. A large set of air-water flow data is ...

Stepped Spillway Performance: Study of the Pressure and Turbulent Kinetic Energy versus Discharge and Slope

In the present study, flow over flat and pooled stepped spillways was simulated three dimensionally. The VOF method and k- ε (RNG) turbulent model was used to simulate the flow over the stepped spillway. The results indicated that the numerical model was acceptably capable of simulating the flow over the pooled and flat stepped spillways for different discharges. Following that, the effect of d...
